In this Thanksgiving season where, historically, women do an absurd amount of work on top of their already absurd amount, I wonder at the four Puritan, and likely Wampanoag women, serving up a meal of thanks for all the Puritan and Wampanoag men and children.
Why only four Puritan women? Many Puritan women remained behind, waiting for the colony to be built. Most of the women who came to New World shores died of diseases… that first winter on the ship as men built homes and storehouses for the colony.
Author Note: However cold it may be, ladies, get thee sun, fresh air and exercise this winter. Swing that hammer. Raise those barns, chop that wood.
I can almost feel the nervous excitement of the women in the outdoor kitchens cooking up corn, shellfish, and deer– almost see the shy glances as the Puritan women learn how to make corn breads, mashes and stews.
Despite the hardship, loss, and the fact that their stuffing couldn’t possibly beat my sister’s, it was beautiful, that first time. Peace reigned, and people helped each other.
If I could change history, it wouldn’t be that first Thanksgiving. I would change the years following where people took instead of gave.
As we gather together in thankfulness of the Lord’s blessings, surrounded by friends and family, I hope to push for beautiful peace and great love.
This has been your Tuesday Thanksgiving trivia tidbit.
