A Pacific NW Thanksgiving–

For generations, possibly millennia, Native American Nations would meet at the huckleberry grounds between Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens.

It was kind of a huckleberry bee where people, young and old, would pick the abundance, dry them in ditches with smoky fires, and thank the Creator for wonderful provision.

Songs, stories, and … horse races, were the after work entertainment.

So long did they race, that the tracks remain to this day.

Many settlers acted a bit uppity about the bounty, preferring blueberries, cherries, and European fruits. Due to a handshake agreement, the huckleberries still belong to the Nations who gathered for so long.

It turns out that huckleberries are absolutely loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin B, and potassium — fighting cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and eye troubles.

Yay for the blessings of long-tested traditions and hard work.
