During the Great Depression, children would be sent to the backs of stores or restaurants to collect greens, old carrots, or other leftovers for their “bunnies and dogs.”

Armed with slingshots, they would also head to the park or woods to hunt for dinner. Weeds, onions and potatoes were staples. For a long time after the Great Depression, people wouldn’t eat these delicious and nutritious foods as a matter of principle.

Fact is, with overgrowing and under fertilizing, these scorned bits of greenery are healthier than many of the grocery store staples.
