Oh chocolate!
In the Americas the Spanish didn’t find as much gold as they hoped. What they did find was silver– which they named Argentina for.
They also found what the Mayans called xocolatl. They drank their xocolatl mixture before battle, used it as refreshment, an apphrodesiac, and medicine.
.. They did the same with the blood of great warriors, but, fortunately, that tradition didn’t take off among the Spanish.
Chocolate did, and the Spanish mixed it with water and honey or sugar for refreshment or with cornmeal for breakfast. They managed to keep this great treasure a secret for over a hundred years.
Well… Not completely a secret. Pirates plundering Spanish silver fleets found disappointment in what they called sheep poo. They tossed trunks of brown treasure overboard,. The secret remained until a Spanish royal brought chocolate to a wedding in the 1600s.
France loved it. Britain loved it. Choco pubs popped up around London. Now the world mixes up mochas, drinks cocoa with cheddar cheese, dips fruit in it, adds it to foods, or eats it sweetened in choco press form we call chocolate bars.
